Eva Sundström obtained her bachelors degree in Umeå in 1987. Apart from sociology, her studies included political science and human geography. For some years she was engaged as a research assistant in political science, and thereafter in municipal investigatory work. In her doctoral dissertation from 2003, she focused on attitudes towards family, work and gender in the welfare states of Germany, Italy and Sweden.
Between 2004 and 2006 Eva Sundström conduced a project aiming to map the welfare states of the West-Nordic countries, Greenland, the Faeroe Islands and Iceland. The project was financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers´ and constituted a part of the larger Welfare Research Programme.
